Space Hound version 1.67 Copyright (C) 1994 and 1995 by Fineware Systems and Al Meadows All Rights Reserved Note: See ReadMe.1st if you are upgrading from a previous version of Space Hound *** Standard Installation *** Follow this easy one-time installation procedure: 1) Create a directory to hold the Space Hound related files. The recommended directory name (used in the following instructions) is "C:\Spacehnd". 2) Copy all Space Hound-related files to this directory. At a minimum you need the following files: SPACEHND.EXE HOUND1.DLL HOUND2.DLL HOUND3.DLL SPACEHND.HLP 3) Note: You will also need a copy of VBRUN300.DLL. This file is available within many CompuServe forums. To obtain this file from CompuServe, GO WINUTIL and search for the file VBRUN3.ZIP. 4) You may optionally copy the following files to C:\Spacehnd: APIGUIDE.DLL MHRUN400.DLL CMDIALOG.VBX MHGCMD.VBX MHTR200.VBX MHVIEW.VBX MUSCLE.VBX THREED.VBX SSDATA2.VBX SSIDXTAB.VBX Note: It is possible that you may have existing copies of these files within your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory or within other directories on your system. These files are used by many different applications both from shareware and commercial companies. The proper location for these files is within the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Caution, before you copy these files to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you should use the Windows File Manager to see if copies of these files already exist. If these files are not present within the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you may simply copy them into it and proceed to step 5. If versions of any of the files are already on your computer, you should use the Windows File Manager to look at each file's date & time to determine if the existing version is newer than the files included within the SPACEHND.ZIP file. If your existing files are newer, Space Hound should work just fine with them and you can proceed to step 5. If the Space Hound files are newer, you should move your original files to a temporary directory in case you encounter problems with other software and need to get them back. Once you have moved the older files to a temporary location, you may copy the Space Hound supplied versions to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Note: Once Space Hound is installed and running, you can use it's ability to peek inside files and view the file's version information. This will generally confirm which one is the older version. 4) Use the Windows Program Manager to place Space Hound within an existing program group or create a new group and then add the program to it. Refer to your Windows' documentation on adding new programs and groups. NOTE: Fineware is aware that the install process is complicated and we would like to help. In general, shareware downloads need to be as small as possible to reduce connect time charges. If you are not comfortable with the installation process described above, you may contact us and for a small postage and handling charge ($2), we will send you a complete setup and installation package. This will still be the unregistered version of Space Hound but it will contain everything you need to properly and easily install the program. That's all there is to installing Space Hound. When Space Hound is activated for the first time, a few one-time only dialog boxes and messages are displayed. Remember that while Space Hound is active, online help is always available by pressing the F1 key. Common installation problems: Many of today's applications include components from other 3rd party distributors. These components are like snap-together parts. When an application is initially designed, the programmer is probably using the latest version of all of the components his application needs. Over time, these components may be enhansed to include new features and capabilities. A frequent problem occurs when a newer application makes use of features that were not available in earlier version of the software. This can cause problems when multiple versions of these components exist on your computer. Please refer to the following list of files and eliminate older version if possible. SPACEHND.EXE APIGUIDE.DLL MHRUN400.DLL CMDIALOG.VBX MHGCMD.VBX MHTR200.VBX MHVIEW.VBX MUSCLE.VBX THREED.VBX SSDATA2.VBX SSIDXTAB.VBX Other Common Problems: SYMPTOM: Attempts to run any of the reports or displays cancels the program all the way to the DOS prompt. CURE: Your autoexec.bat file contains a line for the CD-ROM driver called MSCDEX. This line ( or a preceeding line) may contain a parameter which is causing the problem. Check for /S on the MSCDEX line. If it is there, remove it. It's only function is to allow multiple PCs to share a CD-ROM drive over a Windows for Workgroups network. If the /S appears in the preceeding line, try re-arranging the order of the lines in autoexec.bat so that this line doesn't directly preceed the MSCDEX line. SYMPTOM: A GPFault occurs when you launch the program. Normally, this will be the result of a conflict with some aspect of Space Hound and your video card. The module that reports the fault will have a file extension of .DRV and most likely, you will be using a driver with more than 256 colors. CURE: Make sure that you are using the latest driver. Contact your video card manufacturer. If this does not fix it, try adjusting the number of colors used up or down as well as adjusting the resolution. If this still does not correct the problem, use the standard VGA drivers which ship with Windows. One option you might wish to try is to add the following lines to the SPACEHND.INI file which is located within the application's directory. [Toolbar] Visible=0 [Statusbar] Visible=0 These settings disable the toolbar and status bar. Both of the screen elements contain graphic images and they could be the source of your screen driver problems. SYMPTOM: Attempts to print cause a GPFault or subsequent errors are see in standard Windows components. An example is getting a Divide by Zero error when you attempt to launch Windows WRITE. CURE: You are probably using a PostScript printer driver or other 3rd party print spooler. The only work around is to use the miscellaneous options and set the Printer ByPass option under the Miscellaneous tab. Should this error occur, the method to restore your system to normal functionality is to remove your current printer driver (via the Windows Control Panel) and Re-install it. >>> New Users: Please select "Contents" <<< >>> from the Space Hound "Help" pull-down menu. <<< *** Requirements *** This program requires Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups. *** Documentation *** For full documentation, including context sensitive help, press the F1 key at any time while running Space Hound. *** List Of Files *** The Space Hound 1.62 package consists of the following files: README.TXT introductory information SPACEHND.HLP complete documentation in windows help format SPACEHND.EXE required executable HOUND1.DLL required module HOUND2.DLL required module HOUND3.DLL required module APIGUIDE.DLL required dynamic link library MHRUN400.DLL required dynamic link library CMDIALOG.VBX required custom control MHGCMD.VBX required custom control MHTR200.VBX required custom control MHVIEW.VBX required custom control MUSCLE.VBX required custom control THREED.VBX required custom control SSDATA2.VBX required custom control SSIDXTAB.VBX required custom control LICENSE.TXT license agreement/warranty disclaimer ORDER.TXT order form VENDOR.TXT information for Shareware Distributors/Disk Vendors FILE_ID.DIZ brief description for bulletin boards If you did not receive all these files please contact the author via electronic mail to 70650,2022 on CompuServe, 70650.2022@compuserve.com on Internet, fineware@icon.net on Internet BBTK05A on Prodigy, VB AL on America OnLine, or by sending postal mail to Fineware Systems, P.O.
